OUR FIRST SUMMIT WILD CAMP
LAKE DISTRICT
PARKING-Long House Gill Bridge on the Walna Scar Road. space for a few cars
MILES- 7 MILES RETURN WALK approx
ASCENT-700M approx
FACILITIES- Non on route
TERRAIN- Mixture of good paths and grass paths
From the car park cross the bridge over Long House Gill and continues along the Seathwaite Tarn access track, the track is well maintained stone track all the way to the tarn, approx 1 mile of incline before it levels out and continues to Seathwaite dam where Grey Friar comes in view above the tarn.
We walked past and along the dam towards Grey Friar, this area is often used for Wild camping, but we enjoyed a nice picnic here.
We then followed the steep faint grass path up the side of Grey Friar, it levels off for a short while along a grass ridge before the final ascent to the top.
The top is full of large rock boulders which the kids love scrambling on, fantastic views across the fells surrounding.
We didnt see a sole at the summit all night, the kids took a football and played for about 2 hours at the summit as it was nice weather, it stayed light till gone midnight and didnt actually go that dark, but the kids managed to get a few hours sleep before the 3am alarm to light the flame , this was amazing as we could see the surrounding fells all lit up too.
Back to sleep for a couple of hours before we got up to see the sunset and pack up.
Great place for a wild camp.
ABOUT LIGHT THE LAKES
Organised by the police force for COPS charity with the aim to light all 214 wainwrights at 3am in memory of the fallen police officers and their families, it was fantastic to be apart of.
